If you are on Twitter, which I hope that you are, you have a certain amount of people who follow you and a certain amount who you have decided to follow. People can follow you without you having to follow them back.
Everyone wants to grow their Twitter followers. It would make sense that the more followers you have, the more people will see your tweets. There are several ways you can grow your Twitter list. Some are faster than others. Some cost money and some are free.
I have used a few different programs to grow my list but I am finding that not all followers are the same. A while ago I made the mistake of taking part in #teamfollowback. That was not a good idea. I received a ton of followers but most of them looked like spam or tweeted stuff I was not interested in at all. It did not help my Twitter experience to do this. Although I was able to add people quickly, it was not worth it. It took a while to get rid of all that spam.
I have learned that the best way to gain new followers on Twitter is to tweet good stuff, interact and follow others that share your interests. It might take longer to get a higher number but it will be worth it. It would be better for you to have 1000 followers that enjoy what you are tweeting about instead of 5000 who don’t.
Since Twitter is a wonderful place to connect with others, it would make sense to follow people in your niche or people you enjoy hearing from. You won’t catch every tweet from every person. Twitter isn’t set up that way but you can create a great place to share your posts and talk with others about what interests you.
My very first Twitter account was for my photography blog. I started adding people who loved photography. I only have about 500 followers on that account but I usually get a lot of traffic when I tweet out one of my posts. I think this is because most of the people following me also love photography.
You don’t have to only follow people who share your niche. There are a lot of great people on Twitter that never talk about what I are talking about but if you are wanting to grow you followers, following people who do share your niche is one of the best ways to do it. If they like what you are tweeting about, they are more likely to click on your link or retweet you.
Another great thing about Twitter is that more than just those on your Twitter list will see your tweets. If I am posting something about blogging, I might show up to anyone who searches for “blogging.” If I include the hashtag #blogging, it will show up anytime someone follows that hashtag. This means that every time I tweet I am inviting those who are interested in what I am tweeting about to become a new follower.
How have you grown your Twitter followers?

Julie,
I love using hashtags, I think I may have received many of my new followers that way. And like you said, in my niche is better.

Thanks for the tips Julie, I had considered trying to gain more followers by taking in #teamfollowback but I shall avoid that now. What are your opinions on the #FF follow Friday thing? would you consider that a worthy way to gain followers?
